What Is an Accredited Beauty Course? Understanding Beauty Course Accreditation in Australia

What Is an Accredited Beauty Course

If you are comparing beauty courses online, you will probably see words such as accredited, certified, CPD accredited, industry recognised and nationally recognised.

These terms do not all mean the same thing.

Understanding the difference is particularly important in Australia, where nationally recognised vocational education and training is regulated separately from private, professional-development and industry training.

At The Global Beauty Academy, we believe students should understand exactly what type of training they are purchasing, what their certificate represents and what they may need to check before providing a treatment commercially.

What Does โ€œAccreditedโ€ Mean?

The meaning of accreditation depends on who has accredited the course and what type of accreditation is being provided.

A course may, for example, undergo assessment by an independent industry or Continuing Professional Development organisation to determine whether it meets that organisation’s requirements.

This is different from Australian nationally recognised VET training.

In Australia, nationally recognised vocational education and training is delivered through Registered Training Organisations and includes qualifications, accredited courses, units of competency and skill sets listed on the national training register.

The Global Beauty Academy’s short online courses should not be interpreted as nationally recognised VET qualifications unless a particular course expressly states otherwise.

When we refer to a TGBA course as accredited, we are referring to the relevant private industry or CPD accreditation identified for that course.

CPD and Industry Accreditation

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development.

CPD training is commonly used by professionals to:

  • develop additional knowledge;
  • refresh existing knowledge;
  • learn about new treatments, products or technologies;
  • expand professional development; and
  • document additional learning undertaken during their career.

An independently accredited CPD course has generally undergone an external review against the standards or criteria established by the particular accrediting organisation.

However, CPD accreditation does not turn a private short course into an Australian nationally recognised qualification.

This distinction is important when comparing training providers.

What Does Your TGBA Certificate Represent?

When you successfully complete an eligible TGBA course, you receive a certificate documenting completion of that course.

Depending upon the course, the certificate may also identify applicable CPD or industry accreditation.

Your certificate can provide evidence that you have completed the training and assessment requirements established for that TGBA course.

It should not, however, be represented as an Australian Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma, Statement of Attainment or other nationally recognised VET qualification unless it genuinely forms part of the Australian VET system.

Does Accreditation Mean You Can Perform a Treatment Professionally?

Not automatically.

Whether you can legally or appropriately provide a particular beauty treatment depends on several factors, which may include:

  • the treatment being performed;
  • your state or territory;
  • local council requirements;
  • health and infection-control requirements;
  • whether particular equipment or products are regulated;
  • your existing qualifications or experience;
  • workplace requirements; and
  • the requirements of your insurer.

Some beauty services are not subject to a single nationally prescribed qualification requirement, while other services may be affected by health, radiation, medicines, therapeutic goods, skin penetration or other legislation.

You should therefore check the requirements applying to your treatment and your location before offering a service commercially.

What About Professional Insurance?

Training documentation can be relevant when applying for professional treatment or public liability insurance, but requirements vary between insurers and treatments.

Completing an accredited or CPD-accredited course does not guarantee that an insurer will provide cover.

Before purchasing equipment, advertising a new service or treating paying clients, contact your insurer or insurance broker and confirm:

  1. whether the treatment can be covered;
  2. what training or experience they require;
  3. whether online training is acceptable;
  4. whether supervised practical training is required; and
  5. whether there are any additional conditions or exclusions.

Where possible, obtain confirmation from the insurer in writing.

Will Salons or Employers Accept the Course?

Individual employers determine their own recruitment and competency requirements.

A TGBA certificate may be useful evidence of additional education or professional development, particularly where you are expanding existing beauty skills.

However, we do not claim that every salon, clinic or employer will accept a particular course as meeting its employment requirements.

If you are studying specifically to qualify for a particular job, ask the prospective employer what qualifications or training they require before enrolling.

Can You Use a TGBA Course Overseas?

Beauty-industry requirements differ significantly between countries and sometimes between states, provinces or local jurisdictions.

Completing an online course does not automatically give a person a legal right to practise a treatment in another country.

If you intend to work overseas, you should check the licensing, insurance, qualification and regulatory requirements applying in your intended destination.

Your TGBA certificate documents the training you completed, but recognition or acceptance by an employer, regulator, licensing authority or insurer remains subject to their individual requirements.

Why Choose Independently Reviewed Training?

Independent CPD or industry accreditation can still provide valuable additional assurance when choosing professional-development training.

Depending upon the accreditation involved, an external review may consider matters such as:

  • course structure;
  • educational content;
  • learning objectives;
  • assessment processes;
  • professional relevance; and
  • supporting training materials.

It can therefore help students distinguish structured professional education from informal online information.

The important point is understanding what the accreditation represents rather than assuming every type of accreditation is equivalent.

Choosing the Right Beauty Course

Before enrolling in any beauty course, consider what you actually want the training to achieve.

If you want an Australian nationally recognised qualification, such as a Certificate III or Diploma, look for a Registered Training Organisation offering the appropriate nationally recognised training.

If you are looking to build additional knowledge, undertake professional development, refresh existing skills or learn about a particular beauty treatment, a specialist CPD or industry-accredited short course may be appropriate.

You should also consider whether your chosen treatment requires practical training, supervised experience or other competencies in addition to online education.

Questions to Ask Before Enrolling

Before choosing a course, check:

  • What type of accreditation does the course have?
  • Who provides the accreditation?
  • Is it CPD, industry accreditation or nationally recognised VET training?
  • What certificate will you receive?
  • Does the course include assessment?
  • Is practical training recommended or required for the treatment?
  • Will your insurer accept the training?
  • Are there regulatory requirements in your state or territory?
  • Will the course meet the requirements of a particular employer if employment is your objective?

A reputable training provider should make these distinctions clear.

The Global Beauty Academy Approach

The Global Beauty Academy provides flexible online beauty education covering a wide range of beauty, skin, brow, lash, nail, business and professional-development topics.

Our courses are designed to provide structured learning that students can complete online and at their own pace.

Where a course carries CPD or other independent industry accreditation, this is identified in the course information.

TGBA short courses are private professional-development courses and are not Australian nationally recognised VET qualifications unless expressly stated otherwise.

Because legal, insurance and workplace requirements vary, students remain responsible for confirming any additional requirements applying to the treatments they intend to provide.

Build Your Beauty Knowledge With Confidence

Good education is not about making exaggerated promises.

It is about understanding what you are learning, developing appropriate knowledge, recognising the limits of your training and continuing to build your competence as your career develops.

When comparing beauty courses, look beyond the word โ€œaccreditedโ€ and ask what the accreditation actually means.

That will help you choose training that suits your goals while making informed decisions about professional practice, insurance and further education.

Important Information

The Global Beauty Academy provides private online education and professional-development training. Unless expressly identified as nationally recognised training delivered through an appropriately registered Australian training organisation, TGBA courses do not constitute Australian nationally recognised VET qualifications or Statements of Attainment.

Course completion does not by itself guarantee employment, insurance coverage, licensing, regulatory approval, income or eligibility to perform a particular treatment. Requirements vary according to treatment, jurisdiction, employer and insurer. Students should make their own enquiries before providing services commercially.
